The Olympic champions and world champions David Rudisha and Mo Farah were precious guests at the ceremonial opening of a commemorative plaque for the victory in the Construction of the Year 2016 competition. Reconstruction of the Municipal Stadium in Vitkovice was not only attractive for a jury but also for the public, and it won the national competition in two categories.

The stadium, which was originally finished shortly before World War II and afterwards witnessed a great number of major sports performances, it underwent a complete reconstruction in 2012-2015. "Sometimes at the end of 2010, we saw the first presentation of the design of the reconstruction of the stadium and several years of trying to create a work that Ostrava will be proud of passed since then. And I'm glad it worked out. I would like to thank all those who have been involved in the reconstruction, from designers to contractors," said the former Deputy Mayor of the Statutory City of Ostrava Martin Štěpánek, as the reconstruction took place during his term of office.

The current Deputy Mayor Vladimir Cigánek subsequently reminded that there is a hidden metal box behind the commemorative plaque. "There are documents, photos from the construction, as well as the magazine of the Ostrava City Hall, which summed up the results of the "Construction of the Year" contest, and we would like the box to be opened after fifty years on the 800th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava.

The reigning 800m world record holder and Olympic champion David Rudisha is one of several world athletes who have experienced the atmosphere at the stadium before and after the reconstruction. "It is a beautiful building and a great experience to run in front of the full stands. For the first time I started in Ostrava in 2008, and when I first saw the stadium after reconstruction, I did not believe my eyes. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this building. We can perform the best and prepare for the world's top events at such beautiful stadiums."

During the ceremony, Petra Miškejová, a representative of the Construction of the Year contest, presented hot news. The nearby athletic hall qualified to the second round of the competition this year. Maybe another commemorative plaque will be revealed in Ostrava next year.
