Veronica Campbell-Brown and Wallace Spearmon were the guests at the press conference before the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava 2012 today (22 May). It was a premiere on the Czech soil for the vice- world champion at 200 meters from the Helsinki. On the contrary, Veronica Campell-Brown already felt the fast track last year, when she improved her personal best at 100m to 10.76s.
About coming to Ostrava:
VCB: I had a great performance at 100 meters last year at Golden Spike meeting, so I was looking forward to come back. This is one of the last competitions before Jamaican Trials, so it is very important competition for me.
WS: This is my first appearance in Ostrava. I must apologize I did not manage to come before but the program is always adapted to the US trials. I heard that the track is fast here is Ostrava and I hope the time will be sub 20 seconds at 200m.
Olympic Games are the big challenge for all athletes this year. For Wallace Spearmon it has a special meaning after disqualification in 2008 from the bronze position.
"This year is very important to me and I hope I can get a revenge for the last Olympics. I want to come back from London with a medal. I remember how happy I was in Beijing after finishing third and then the disqualification.”
Veronica has already 5 Olympic medals and hopes to get some more. "It's a big challenge; I have two Olympic golds, but now I do not care about that. So far, I think especially about Trials at 100 and 200 meters waiting for me after Ostrava, and then I will concentrate primarily on technique. My motivation is to always perform well and I feel there is still enough to bring. My life revolves around athletics, I train hard, I try to use my talents and most importantly I am still hungry for success. I am determined and patient. That can be the recipe to stay on the top for long time.”
Veronica celebrated her 30th birthday last week while staying in Shanghai. "I was just at the Diamond League meeting in Shanghai. I was a little shopping and I got gifts from my manager and roses from my husband. It was a very nice day and I enjoyed it.”
19.83 is the meeting record of Usain Bolt from 2008 at 200m. The record among women is already 21-year-old one from Jarmila Kratochvílová 22.07 from 1981. "I will try to keep my eye on the Usain´s record and if the weather is good, everything is possible. I already booked the lane number 6 for me here,” said Spearmon. Campbell-Brown has a bit more difficult position. "I'm not sure how fast I can run but I hope that I will do myself the best. If it is my destiny to set records here in Ostrava, so why not to break it this time? I will run as fast as possible and see what happens. The people are warm and supportive here, so I hope we will have good chance to show the best performance.”
