GOLDEN SPIKE PREPARES A GREAT RUNNING SHOW
One month before the 59th Ostrava Golden Spike meeting, the organisers continue their hard work with the preparation of this year´s event, which will be the part of the new World Athletics Continental Tour Gold for the first time on 8th September 2020. The whole Tour starts on 11th September in Turku, Finland, with the Paavo Nurmi Games.
Despite the actual limitations, the organisers managed to secure the participation of the best European runners. And it can also be said, that they are also the top of the world scene. Ostrava Golden Spike will offer not less than three women´s track events, which will offer a unique chance also for the best Czech runners at 800m, 1500m and 5000m.
The 5000m race will see one of the most shining stars of today, the double world champion and the multiple world and European record holder Sifan Hassan of Nederland. Her main goal will be to improve the meeting record of Meseret Defar 14:30.18 from 2007. However, even faster time is expected.
„It is an exceptional thing for me to come back to Ostrava. In 2013, I got the chance to start at the major international meeting for the first time in Ostrava. I was surprised to get the victory. It was a starting point to the highest level. For this reason, Ostrava means a lot to me and I am looking forward to my comeback,” said Hassan, who won the Spike at 1500m in 4:04.02 in 2013, which used to be her personal best. Her maximum nowadays is 3:51.95 (also the European record) and 14:22.12 at 5000m (also ER).
Important person of the 1500m race will be the 22-year-old Briton Jemma Reeki, the U23 European champion at 800 and 1500m from 2019. Her target will be to attack 4 minutes, which used to be the plan of the organizers for a couple of last years. Reeki managed a huge improvement indoors this year up to 1:57.91 at 800m and 4:00.52 at 1500m. Also the best Pole and the 2018 European medalist Sofia Ennaoui will start (4:01.00) as well as the home runner, the European finalist Simona Vrzalová (4:04.80). The meeting record is by Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay 4:00.96 from 2017.
The women´s 800m will have the British star, the European champion outdoors and indoors Laura Muirová with her maximum 1:58.42. She holds the British records outdoors and also indoors at different middle distances. She is one of the few Europeans who can keep the pace with the best Africans. At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing and in Doha 2019, she was fifth at 1500m. In 2017, at home in London, she was even fourth. Her legendary triumphs were at the 1500 and 3000m at European indoor championships in 2017 and 2019. Organizers believe that she will run under 2 minutes. On the start, also the actual Czech number one Diana Mezulianiková and Slovak champion Gabriela Gajanová.
